Uzungöl at a glance

Uzungöl is a lake in a mountain valley in Trabzon's Çaykara district, at about 1,090 m, surrounded by spruce and pine forests and old wooden houses in the Black Sea style, with a two-minaret mosque on its shore overlooking the valley.

What to do in Uzungöl

  • Walk around the lake on a paved path of about 3.5 to 4 km, fairly flat and suitable for everyone.
  • Have lunch at one of the restaurants around the lake; trout is a local speciality.
  • Shop for honey, cheese and local products, and sit in a tea garden.
  • For nature lovers: the Karester plateau on the southern mountain above the lake, reachable from spring until early winter.

Private car or minibus?

«Çaykara Tur» runs minibuses (dolmuş) to Uzungöl from Trabzon's Çömlekçi district all year. With family, luggage and children a private car is still easier: it leaves from your hotel door when it suits you, stops where you like on the way, and returns when you want.

Before you go

  • The lake sits at about 1,090 m: bring a light jacket even in summer.
  • In July, August and on holidays the place and the road get crowded; the car queue has passed ten kilometres on a holiday, so leaving early saves the wait.
  • In winter heavy snow falls and temperatures drop below zero, and some tourist facilities may close.
